Otis Escalator Company
The Otis Escalator Company was founded in 1853. This company mainly built elevators and escalators. Otis introduced the first escalator. They used Charles Seeberger's and Jesse Reno's idea and combined them. As Otis did this, they also improved the various designs.
Quotes from the Otis Escalator Company "Otis wrote history with the introduction of the escalator in 1899. Today, we continue to improve the product through ongoing innovation. Similarly, Otis’ moving walkways offer safety, reliability and efficiency for both commercial and public applications." "In the 1920s, Otis engineers, led by David Lindquist, combined and improved the Jesse Reno and Charles Seeberger escalator designs, and created the cleated, level steps of the modern escalator in use today. Over the years, Otis dominated the escalator business, but lost the product's trademark. The word escalator lost its proprietary status and its capital "e" in 1950 when the U.S. Patent Office ruled that the word "escalator" had become just a common descriptive term for moving stairways." |
